De Nieuwe Ooster, the Netherlands' largest cemetery first laid out in 1889 and 1915 to designs by Leonard Springer, has been developed with a memorial park with very much its own spatial identity. It consists of a series of parallel strips of different widths and designs, some encased in hedges, others open fields. The two principal strips are an elongated pool and a columbarium of sculptural zinc-clad objects containing secluded rooms for the urns.
