Running beneath the River Maas is a concrete tunnel consisting of two separate tubes each with two lanes for motorized traffic and two smaller tubes, one for cyclists above another for pedestrians. It was prefabricated in sections which were carried by floating crane to their destination and subsequently sunk. The signature of architect Van der Steur is particularly evident in the design of the two filter houses on the north and south banks.
