Hans Ruijssenaars sought to spatially restructure both sides of the Broersvest traffic artery with a new central axis running from the old church in the centre to the neo-Gothic St Liduina. One side of the new urban square (Stadserf) now contains housing above shops designed by Kees Rijnboutt; on the other, Ruijssenaars incorporated a ‘60s high-rise by the Kraaijvangers into the new town hall. Both elevations along the square have colonnades. The town hall also houses the library and the records office. A new theatre with a remarkable timber roof structure and timber interior shares the foyer with the town hall.
