BUILDING TYPE:
Buildings for education

This pre-vocational secondary school has been carefully embedded in the protected village centre of Laren by sinking and camouflaging part of it below a large playground. The building breaks down roughly into four parts, tied together by outdoor areas, some of them roofed. The buried portion houses practice labs; the portion opposite it has technical classrooms on the ground floor, staffrooms on the first floor and the assembly hall on the second. The only tall element is the sloping roof of the assembly hall with the square box of the fly tower poking through it. A third portion houses various practical classrooms for domestic science, a bakery, kitchen and restaurant. All theory rooms line both sides of a double corridor in the fourth portion.
