ARCHITECT(URAL OFFICE):
Jan Gerko Wiebenga

BUILDING TYPE:
Buildings for education

Wiebenga's design for this school shows that besides being a structural engineer he was also an architect in full command of the functionalist idiom. It consists of two blocks separated by an entrance hall with stair, with the roof of the less-tall elongated block functioning as a roof terrace. The structure is a concrete frame into which a number of steel stairs and window and door frames have been inserted. Though partly renovated, this school has suffered less than another designed by Wiebenga when director of Public Works, the Naai- en Knipschool (1930) on Ophelialaan, which was wilfully mutilated in 1989.
