BUILDING TYPE:
Buildings for education

Herman Hertzberger is one of the Netherlands’ finest when it comes to designing school buildings. Particularly his use of circulation space and stairs as additional areas for study and encounter, tight budgets notwithstanding, has produced exceptional buildings with a great spaciousness (see Almere, Apollo Schools). This school for pre-vocational education for 1000 students ranges classrooms either side of a well with many broad steps that can be used for lessons as well as providing smooth circulation. A less-tall portion along the railway houses practical classrooms and a hall for sports activities. The mosaics lining the low wall along the forecourt were designed by the students.
