The number of tracks at Barendrecht has been increased from four to nine to accommodate the forthcoming High Speed Rail System and the Betuwe freight-only route. To limit any inconvenience this might cause, the tracks run through a 1.5 kilometre long concrete box, actually a ground-level tunnel, with a park on top. Concrete largely cedes to glass for the 300 metre long station. The platforms, entrances and the largest glass facade face east instead of towards the town centre and are approached along underpasses or along the top through the park. The design seeks to give a sense of the station’s great scale while visually tempering this aspect with abstract patterns.
