This building is a starter’s platform in two senses. It is to give a clear view of the starting signal for rowing competitions, but it is also the first realized building by John Körmeling, who operates on the interface between art and architecture. Officially the building is an art object to liven up the rowing course. However, Körmeling’s architecture is disarmingly functional and lucid of form and construction: a concrete slab serves as a backdrop for the umpire’s balcony; his assistant has his own aluminium cabin in which to operate the digital timekeeping.
