Jo Coenen's masterplan for the bank of the river Maas abutting the old town, thoroughly congested as this was, has the traffic flows running smoothly again, at the same time giving the city a new public domain. A key intervention is to deflect traffic flows from the bridge (Wilhelminabrug) to the city or one of the river banks and partly reroute it underground. Most of the development between the approach ramp to the bridge and the market square (Markt) has been renewed, incorporating historical elements in the new fabric. The Markt itself has been restructured and a new walking area reinstates the lost link with the Maas. The underground car park also has market and retail duties to perform, expanding the public realm in the process.
