Even Lelystad, one of the cradles of modern open planning, has been unable to escape today's call for an organic urban growth. Twelve plots on the edge of the city centre have been massed and sited as latter-day canal houses by an assortment of architects. With the contours and the variation in breadth and height fixed beforehand, the architects have instead immersed themselves in a cacophony of forms and materials. Erick van Egeraat's forward-leaning corner block has a steel supporting structure clad with plasterwork resembling concrete; René van Zuuk's glass facade sports a pattern of concrete twigs; SeARCH's little apartment building has rippling balconies and a timber frame with steel edging.
