BUILDING TYPE:
Freestanding houses

Interlocked like a three-dimensional Chinese puzzle, these two villas were originally to have been allotted half a plot apiece. By designing them as a single entity the two architects were able to give their respective clients a living room across the full width of the shared plot, one on the first floor, the other on the second, so that both houses profit from the view. The to-and-fro movement traced by the floor and wall separating the houses comes across loud and clear in the facade. Inside each house, voids provide maximum linkage between levels.
