This house for banker Van der Mandele, instigator of Vreewijk garden estate, is a perfect example of the archetypal house: brick walls, a tiled saddleback roof, small wood-framed windows and near-symmetrical facades. The house may be construed as a three-dimensional statement of intent by the Delft School; it has 'a simplicity that eludes the simple passer-by, but which makes those sensitive to proportion stop in wonder'.
