VAN DEN BROEK & BAKEMA, 1960-1961
Offenbachlaan 5, Rotterdam
EXTENSION: Van den Broek & Bakema ARCHITECT(URAL OFFICE): Van den Broek & Bakema BUILDING TYPE: Freestanding houses PUBLICATIONS: Bauen + Wohnen 1963 p. 138; Architectuur Rotterdam 1945-1970, 1993
Bakema's robust and expressive functionalism informs the architecture of this private house. The main shape is a more or less square plan which groups the spaces around an internal court. Spatially the design is configured as a sequence of increasingly open spaces, from introverted bedrooms by way of a half-open entrance cum kitchen block to the living zone fanning out to the south. The materials are restricted to concrete, fair-faced brick and wood. A window band of varying height threads between the concrete upstand wall and timber roof line.
In 2011 an underground extension was added. |
