BUILDING TYPE:
Freestanding houses

The streets are named after philosophers in the Golden Mile of Rotterdam's Lombardijen district. Privacy for the occupants was the keyword when designing this house for a general practitioner in Karl Marxstraat. Facades are mute save for a strip of fenestration varying from 16 centimetres to 1.13 metres wide. All dimensions in the house derive from Le Corbusier's Modulor. The walls are exceedingly thick, creating recesses at the windows. The house, which has a light cove at its centre, is of concrete below and dark brick above, with a concrete balcony projecting from the east side. A white glazed brick extension contains a garage and the doctor's small surgery.
