Industrial and public-utility buildings

Spaanse Polder ('Spanish polder') really took off as an industrial estate during the reconstruction era. Before then a row of industrial buildings had materialized on the north side along the river (Schiedamse Schie), mainly paint factories, including Tollens. It was founded by the grandfather of the 19th-century poet Hendrik Tollens, who was himself a director. The building was erected in two stages by Van den Broek, the first between 1941 and 1943, the second between 1952 and 1955. It has been ignored in the literature on Van den Broek, unjustifiably in view of its meticulous spatial structure, functional architecture, attractive shed roofs and the graceful concrete roof structure whose design draws on the structure of the building as a whole. For some years now the complex has served as a mixed-use building for small enterprises.
