Here, two linked villas are set against the bank of a road so that the street side has two storeys and the garden side only one. The ground floor contains the entrance, a garage, a guest room and a fitness room toplit from the patio. The living space round the patio (which may be opened up) recalls the villa and apartment plans, so admired by Koolhaas, of Mies van der Rohe. The materiality and detailing, such as the floating roof, sloping walls and colour planes that deny the functional division into two, are allusions to the 1950s.
