In 1995 the CWL (Leerdam housing corporation) held a competition to design an all-glass house in Leerdam, the Dutch glasswork capital. Earlier glass houses such as those of Mies van der Rohe and Philip Johnson were based on the optimum transparency of glass walls. The winning design here is informed by solid facades of some 45 centimetres thick assembled from ten-millimetre-thick glass plates; the whole was glued together in situ. Even the timber roof is borne aloft by glass. After a brief stint as a showroom the house became occupied like any other.
The glass house is demolished in 2009.
