Art Academy Maastricht
Laid out on a former courtyard, the new Herdenkingsplein is enclosed on one side by Wiel Arets’s Art Academy and on the other two by housing by the firms of Boosten Rats and Mecanoo, the latter being responsible for the area masterplan and layout. Though both elongated blocks are dominated by a colonnade, the two are utterly distinct in their physical manifestation. The access galleries in Fons Rats’ east side block make for an expansive exterior, whereas Mecanoo’s south side block opts for greater rhythmic variety.
