A housing estate for employees of Dutch Rail alongside Haarlem's domed prison building had to be demolished when its foundation piles were found to be rotten. With the wishes of the original residents in mind, a redevelopment project was set up retaining such features as the development density, the curve in the street pattern and the red roofing tiles. Problems that had dogged the old estate - parking, excessively small dwellings, lack of play space - were solved not least by adding an indoor car park and a street-in-the-air. Slots in the wooden boardwalk are for admitting light and air to the car park below. Dwellings have facades that are of brick on the outside and wood on the inside. The taller perimeter development acts as a natural noise baffle for the railway line.
