The Ludgerkerk, a basic rectangular box of 20 by 44 metres in the centre of a walled garden, closed its doors in 1999. A spate of plans to give the church a new use came to nothing until it was decided to remove the roof and externalize the former church space as a communal residential court. The timber inner side of the church front, which rests on an encircling glass strip, in its new duty forms the basis of 16 housing units. The ground-floor units run from church wall to garden wall, with the upper-storey dwellings set back. Inside, the layout follows the original 4-metre grid of the church; there is a 'closed' portion and a solar court 4 metres across. Dwellings line the two long sides, with the head ends of the church still in place.
