Housing Spangen Block I & V

As City Architect to Rotterdam, Oud designed a number of housing blocks in the new district of Spangen. These took quite a battering during the urban renewal operations of the 1980s. In the two blocks VIII and IX Oud experimented with communal courtyards. Block IX has been demolished and replaced with new build and a playground. Of block VIII only the part on Pieter Langendijkstraat is by Oud. Only the corner development and the lower edge remain; the rest of the frontage has been plastered over. Once again it was Theo van Doesburg who prescribed the colours for the woodwork. He opted for contrast with a colour composition of yellow, green and blue in combination with black, grey and white. The colours were to run diagonally and asymmetrically across the frontage. Oud was enthusiastic to begin with but then changed his mind. This would be the last time the two would collaborate.
