APARTMENT COMPLEX JOURE
CLAUS EN KAAN, 2000-2004, Ter Huivra, Joure
Claus en Kaan
The sinuous form of these two buildings with apartments and commercial units derives from the park-like setting in the centre of Joure. If the fluid lines accord well with the natural surroundings, the architecture - white elongated balcony panels, prodigiously jutting roofs, uninterrupted facades in steel and glass - could not contrast more with the context in this Frisian village. The filigree steel fencing of the balconies has a veiled effect on the facades. The whole stands on a white floor in the green grass as if to drive home the ensemble's exceptional position. Below it all is an underground parking facility. The commercial units on the ground floor are reached off an encircling arcade analogous to the balconies of the dwellings upstairs.
