Housing Block Kralingen

This residential estate consists of small low-rise blocks in open rows, the first time this modernist principle was applied in practice in Rotterdam. In the open row model all units have a garden or balcony facing southeast for maximum sunlight. So there are no traditional streets with front doors on both sides and enclosed outdoor areas; here gardens with low brick walls and fencing overlook the street. Its unusual layout notwithstanding, the Jaffa estate with its brick facades and unassertive architecture looks less spectacular than Oud's white-rendered housing or the concrete dwellings of the 1920s. Van Tijen and Van den Broek masterplanned the estate; the architecture is by W.Th.H. ten Bosch, who was responsible for much of the housing in Blijdorp.
