An initial layout of perimeter blocks was modified, with the support of A. Keppler, director of the Municipal Housing Agency, into the present combination of open row housing with low-rise shops on the north side, streets built up on both sides and communal gardens. Though the structure is traditional and orientation to the street strictly speaking is more a question of closed blocks that have been opened up, this project nevertheless signifies the definitive breakthrough of row housing in Amsterdam's urban expansion schemes.
