As City Architect to Rotterdam, Oud designed a number of housing blocks in the new district of Spangen. These took quite a battering during the recent urban renewal operations in this area. Of Blocks I and V, designed in association with Meischke & Schmidt, only the continuous plinth recalls the original architecture; the roofs have even been levelled off in the part designed by Oud. Block IX, in which he experimented with a communal courtyard, has been demolished and replaced with new-build and a playground. Of Block VIII only the section on the Pieter Langendijkstraat is by Oud. Only the corner development and the bottom edge remain; the rest of the frontage has been plastered over.
