Water Project

In 1903 work began on this singel, or tree-lined avenue accompanied by water, and Mathenesserlaan, the wide thoroughfare intersecting it. They are part of De Jongh's general expansion plan for Rotterdam, whose avenues and singels were soon graced with houses for the moneyed classes. These featured revival styles of every kind with elements of Art Nouveau in many cases. Jac. van Gils, C.N. van Goor and P.G. Buskens are three of the better-known architects to design houses here. Many others were the work of small private developers, dyed-in-the-wool builders who worked with standard designs. Heemraadssingel with all its space and wealth of greenery has been a popular place to live for more than a century. That said, many of its large houses have been converted into office space.
