A welter of dwelling types plus commercial space and public areas join forces in this compact urban block. The block’s size refers to the huge port buildings in the vicinity. The dwellings vary in size from one- to five-room apartments; in height and depth from double-height penthouses to narrow, deep units squeezed in-between; and in means of access from a central corridor between flats to gallery and porch access types. This diversity is expressed in the facade by differences in fenestration, materials and colours. A large recess scooped from its centre reveals that the building is largely standing in the waters of the IJ.
