This holiday house was built at the behest of an association (Vereeniging Buitenbedrijf) run by the socially enlightened Volkshuis foundation to give young working-class women from Leiden the opportunity to spend weekends out of doors and become acquainted with the countryside. The stand-out feature of this sensitively if traditionally developed design is the main hall. It is presided over by a monumental staircase whose floors have an intricate repetitive yellow and black tile pattern by Theo van Doesburg and stained glass windows by Harm Kamerlingh Onnes (1893-1985). The tiled mural above the entrance is also the work of Van Doesburg. De Vonk was published in nos. 1 and 2 of De Stijl in 1918. Van Doesburg explains: ‘The illustration shows how functional and constructional architecture can achieve a sculptural aspect that is aesthetic, monumental and organic.’
